Bac Kan town   Na tu historical monument   Phu Thong station historical monument   Ba Be lake  (Ba Be national park)

From Bac Kan town, go back along the national road no.3 about 9km, come Cam Giang commune, Bach Thong district, we visit  Na Tu historical monument where the detachment of youth volunteers 312 protected Na Tu bridge and  the road form Na Tu to Phu Thong. Uncle Ho visited this and donated 4 verses:


“No difficult work

Only faltering brain

To dig the mountain up and fill in the sea

Try one's best to be successful”

 

In 1996, the ministry of Vietnam culture and infomation (ministry of culture- sports and toursm of Vietnam recognized ) Na Tu historical monument to be national historical monument. It was embellished more spacious place, including Uncle Ho memorial house, target house; camp of youth volunteers and other places.

After visiting the Na Tu historical monument, back to national road about 9km, we visit Don Phu Thong historical monument which is about 300 meters from Phu thong fork (cross point between the national road No.3 and road no.258) belongs to Phu Thong burgh, Bach Thong district, about 70 km northwest of the Bac Kan town.

In October 1947, about 1.200 soldiers  of French expeditionary army skydived to hold and built strong station so as to control and  destroy our army.

Three times, Our army attacked Phu Thong station so order to ensure  the growth of our army, practice to attack Dien Bien Phu – headquarters of French domination.

Ba Bể National Park is located in Bac Kan Province, about 240 kilometers north of Hanoi, about 70 km northwest of the provincial capital Bac Kan, and about 14 km west of the town of Cho Ra.

Ba Bể National Park was established in Decision dated 10.11.1992 83/TTg of the Prime Minister, it covers an area of 100.48 km². Facilities include an information center, guest houses, a lake management station, and an ecological research station opened in 2004.

Ba Be National Park is one of the most beautiful natural parks in the north Vietnam, includes beautiful fresh water lake , limestone mountains and primitive forests.

Flora and fauna

The vegetation in Ba Bể National Park mainly consists of limestone and evergreen forest. The former covers steep mountain slopes on which the soil cover is thin. The latter depends on thicker soil cover and has a higher species diversity. The dominating tree species of the lime stone forest are Burretiodendron hsienmu (Tiliaceae) and Streblus tonkinensis (Moraceae). Climbing bamboo (Ampelocalamus) is a regional endemic plant common on the hill slopes near the lake shore.

65 mammal species have been recorded in the park, among them: Chinese Pangolin (Manis pentadactyla), Slow loris (Nycticebus coucang), Rhesus macaque, Stump-tailed macaque, François' langur, Asian black bear, European otter, Owston's palm civet, Asian golden cat, Mainland serow, Red giant flying squirrel, Particolored flying squirrel (Hylopetes alboniger), Hairy-footed flying squirrel as well as 27 bat species.

Furthermore, 233 bird species, 43 reptile and amphibian species among them the king cobra and the Vietnamese Salamander (Paramesotriton deloustali), have been recorded. In Ba Be lake, 106 fish species from 61 genera, 17 families, and 5 orders have been recorded. The park is also noteworthy for its diversity in butterflies for which 354 species have been recorded.

Scenic landscape features

Puong Cave is a large cave in the north of the park through which the Nang River flows. The main cave is up to 50 meters high and about 300 meters long. It is inhabited by a population of 5 to 10 000 bats belonging to 18 species. The "Fairy Pond" is rock basin filled with clear water which seeps through the surrounding limestone rock. The Dau Dang Waterfall is formed by the Nang River. It consist of a sequence of rapids which stretch over a length of almost one kilometer. Widow Island is a small, cone-shaped islet near the center of the southern lake. According to the local legend, the islet was once the home of an old widow who was spared from a flood through divine intervention.

Other attractions in the park

Puong Cave is a large cave in the north of Ba Bể Park through which the Năng River flows. The main cave is up to50 metres (160 ft) high and about 300 metres (980 ft) long, in limestone formation. The cave is inhabited by a large population of bats which belong to 18 species, out of which three species are identified for plant pollination and scattering seeds.

The "Fairy Pond" is an isolated rock basin filled with clear water that seeps through the surrounding limestone rock. However, the water level in this pond is the same as the Ba Bể Lake. The Dau Dang Waterfall is formed by the Năng River. It consist of a sequence of rapids which stretch over a length of almost one kilometre as the river flows into Tuyên Quang Province.

Widow Island is a small, cone-shaped islet near the centre of the southern part of the lake. According to local legend, the islet was once the home of an old widow who was spared from a flood through divine intervention. Other well known caves include Puông Cave, Nả Poỏng, Ba Cửa Cave, Sơn Dương Cave and the Kim Hỷ nature reserve.
